FESTIVALS: MORE THAN MEETINGS! | FRESH Hall

In a mix of science, philosophy and art George Parker will take us back in time to look at the primal format of meetings. Why did nomadic cultures meet and what happened when they got together? Are people still meeting for the same reasons? What would happen when we took the core driving forces and ingredients of these type of gatherings and redesigned our meetings based on that? Get ready to be entertained, informed and provoked! And join us for a networking reception afterwards, facilitated by Martin Sirk!

Speaker: George Parker, Martin Sirk

WORKSHOP ON CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING | Venue: Headroom

The workshop will be focused on the basic principles of creating: associative thinking, judging ideas, moments of inspiration, putting aside one's ego and more. It’s back to the basics, to universal methods of creating applicable to everyone. It will also focus on the event you organise, with the intention of learning to take different points of view and if necessary, to renew and improve any progress.

Maarten Bel will share his own experiences from the field whether it is designing an exhibition, an installation, a performance, a book, or even preparing a good meal. His process of creation is a continuing story of which participants will be able to get a first-hand view. Maarten will also take you on a journey through self-reflection. What is already good and what could be done better? How does one implement this?

THE RISE OF EVENT FESTIVALISATION - CONFERENCES MEET FESTIVALS | Venue: City Hall

Conferences have long been focused on learning, and more recently, several industry reports refer to the growing value of networking. At this session, we will look at the value of designing pleasant experiences and how that influences learning and networking. What can we learn from festivals? How can we implement festival-style elements into conferences? How can we transform a boring conference into a great experience without over-doing it? Are festivals only about fun or do learning and networking happen at these events too? We will look for connections and inspiration in some successful case studies.

*** TURNOVA NIGHT ***

16:30 - 18:00

INCLUSIVE EVENT DESIGN - DESIGNING FOR ALL | Venue: Academie

This session will be divided in 3 moments: a theatre performance, a conversation and movie.

THEATRE: Be entertained with a special performance by Theatre Stap a professional theatre company creating performances in which mentally disabled people take centre stage.

Theater Stap presents ‘The show of the half-witted and the intact’. For this performance, the director Bart Van Gyseghem started from the vulnerable position occupied in today’s world by the mentally disabled. In the pursuit of perfection, this world is willing to sacrifice those who cannot follow.
This short play shows a bizarre world in which nearly everything is imperfect, decayed too; everything seems to have had its best time. Nevertheless, the mechanism keeps on turning in an absurd way, even though sand got into the machine.
Conventions get off the track, codes get lost, the grotesque takes over. We follow characters who try to get somewhere: a doctor in the circus, a clown in the hospital, trapeze artists operate in the void, an insurance broker wants to force some papers on someone … The half-witted are put together and the intact are dismantled.
At the end nothing was gained, nothing recovered, nothing reached. The ritual was performed. Without anyone intervening, other shows will follow. Until the show is threadbare and someone sweeps the flakes and splinters together into a little pile.
Eight mentally disabled actors play ‘The show of the half-witted and the intact’ — nothing in the hands, nothing in the pockets. All they need is twenty minutes to leave us, the audience, behind as being orphaned, confused and half drunk.

SESSION: Designing events for all starts at the very early planning stages. Are we selecting a venue accessible for everyone? Is our speaker’s line-up diverse and inclusive? Do the menus avoid the most common food allergies? Are we considering in our budget the need for tools like simultaneous translation, or sign language interpreters? Join the conversation on how to design inclusive events.

MOVIE "Downside Up":  In a world populated by people with the Down Syndrome, a child is born who is ‘different’. He misses one chromosome and thereby is ‘abnormal’. In this wordless film, a doctor explains us in an incomprehensible language, the ins and outs of the matter. He sketches the important moments in life and thereby the difficulties of being ‘different’.
Downside Up is a shortfilm by Peter Ghesquière, in close partnership with Theatre Stap. The film won several (international) awards and was selected on the longlist for an Oscar nomination.

Speakers: Theater Stap, Jessica Grifgnée

SOCIAL ROOMS AND INTERACTION ENVIRONMENTS: FACILITATING NETWORKING AT CONFERENCES | Venue: City Hall

Tips to create opportunities for interaction and 'networking' in conferences. Get fresh insights from the ongoing research project on social rooms and interactive environments by Loughborough University in England.  You know how this goes: During the breaks we all talk to the people we already know, so the quantity of new connections is low.

This unique research observes and identifies how conference delegates meet and network during coffee and other breaks. The researchers observed delegates during break periods using an observational technique based on conversation analysis and ethnomethodology.

They examined:

  • how delegates flow in break rooms in relation to each other and the material environment (e.g. tables with food/drink; tables to eat at/drink from),
  • how they initiated interaction with one another
  • how the design of social rooms and interaction environments can either increase or decrease delegates' networking opportunities

Be in the know of this cool science scoop for the meeting industry…

WORKSHOP ON BODY, MIND AND SOUL | Venue: City Hall

There is a school where kids are moving halfway every class. At first some resisted, now that ask for it. Should we do the same at Conferences. A class or a conference session is about the same length…

At this workshop, you will learn the value of considering Body, Mind and Soul into your conference’s programme and how it improves learning, but also can be a great network booster. While you practice, you will release tension, discover and feel your body, and you will gain insight into your vertical and horizontal identity:

  • Your genetic structure and your (method of) interaction with your body and mind determines your vertical identity.
  • Your (method of) interaction with the environment and others determines your horizontal identity.

The big message from BMS (Body, Mind and Soul) is to be aware of the link between both identities and to put the intersection in the right place: not too low (belly = feeling zone) and not too high (brain = thinking zone). The challenge is to be aware of both identities and to be in control. Your body is the gateway… So expect to move slowly and enjoy.

Speaker: Jan Van Doorens

C&I THE END OF Q&A! | Venue: City Hall
The traditional Q&A moment at conferences only activates 1 to 3% of the participants. That is simply not good enough anymore. Your current participants are used to having conversations and give their own input in social media, and they expect the opportunity to do so at meetings too. Replace Q&A by C&I and the level of “inter-action” goes up to 100%. C&I stand for Conversations and Input is a simple technique that brings true interaction to the next level.
This technique is all about conversations (C) amongst participants and the input (I) from those conversations. The C from “Conversations” is the most important part as conversations in small groups of like-minded strangers at a session leads to nothing less than MAGIC. C&I will be explained, step by step, based on a case with sessions of 300 people during a medical conference. And experiencing it at FRESH19 will make sure you can start applying this immediately.  After this session at FRESH you will be able to apply C&I to your meetings and conferences. Conversations among participants is the most powerful turbo on presentation-impact. People learn from each other; they truly participate, they get to know each other better and they all love it. The good news is that speakers can do this, with just a little help to get them going. Low cost, high Impact: we all can use some C&I!
